What is SYNC?
SYNC is a wearable device that allows deaf and hard of hearing users to experience music and particularly in relation to nightlife by means of vibration and LED lights. SYNC listens to the music around you and converts this music into a series of vibrations that correspond to the bear of the music. The LED lights within the device act as an easy way to distinguish the genre of music being played as each genre has a corresponding colour for example pink for Pop. The lights also make the device more of a fun accessory for concerts and clubs by providing colourful light. But the LED's are not just purely for aesthetic purposes, they also flash to the colour of the beat of the music you're listening to.
The Inspiration
The project brief was all about creating a sound experience and the consideration of the word "speaker" and having done disability projects in the past and some related to the deaf community I was really intrigued by the idea of the way in which we can "listen" to sound. Sound is such a powerful thing that yes is audible but also has a feeling both physically and emotionally. Speaker and sound resonate, the sound waves and vibrations can be physically felt. And then there is also the way that music makes us feel from happy upbeat music to something sad and mellow, it creates a sense of emotion and feeling. And so it only felt right to explore both these ideas of sound and its forms and transform them into a physical product.
